The Game Master Pathway:
A practical guide to facilitating educational games.

How do we turn a game into a learning experience? Choosing a game is one step, but preparing the session, supporting players and helping them reflect afterwards are just as important.

Following our Erasmus+ training course Facilitator’s Playground, we created The Game Master Pathway, a practical booklet for people preparing and facilitating educational games.

During the training, youth workers and educators experienced different game formats, practiced facilitating them and explored how to support learning through play. The booklet brings together key guidance from this process.

What’s inside?

The booklet follows the main steps of a game master’s work:

  1. Before the game: preparing yourself, the materials and the space, and considering the group’s needs.
  2. During the game: introducing the activity, supporting players and paying attention to group dynamics.
  3. After the game: guiding reflection and helping participants connect the experience to their lives.

At the end, a practical checklist brings the main ideas together.

Who is it for?

The Game Master Pathway can support youth workers, educators, volunteers and anyone using games for learning. You can use it when preparing your first educational game, introducing new game masters to facilitation or reviewing your own practice.

This resource was developed as a result of the international training course “Facilitator’s Playground”, organized in January 2026 in Estonia as part of the Erasmus+ KA1 Accreditation of Shokkin Group Estonia, funded by the Erasmus+ programme through the Estonian National Agency (euroopanoored.eu).
